37 million viewers watched Sarah “Barracuda” Palin deliver her acceptance speech at the Republican Convention in Minnesota last night. That’s just 1 million less than Obama’s views the week prior.
The media talking heads made baseball references like “hitting it out the park” and “a star is born” to describe her deliverance. She was, in their eyes, the new generation of conservatism: a young mom, with 5 kids, including one with Downs Syndrome; she eats Bambi hotdogs and Bullwinkle burgers; a lifelong member of the NRA who can literally shoot straight from the hip. (and lip if you heard her acerbic tongue)
But what bothered me as an independent constitutionalist, was I didn’t get a sense of who “Sarah” was. Particularly as it pertains to her platforms.
The first half of her speech was a narrative on her life and her experience in a small, small town of Wasilla, a town so small, Google Earth would be challenged. She spoke of reforms as a Governor of a large state with a tiny population. She praised her running mate, John McCain, for his toughness in the Senate. She made wisecracks about selling a private jet on Ebay that belonged to her wasteful predecessors which drew roar. She took potshots at Democratic Nominee, Barack Obama, belittling his community organizer background.
Even poor Michelle Obama was not safe from her crosshairs. Adding how proud she always was to be American. Another baffling jab since we all know that Alaskans like to consider themselves a state within a state. I am sorry, I was expecting her to offer what her vision for an America tomorrow would look like. Her stance on issues, one that resonates with folk concerning gender, race and the economy. Outside of her speaking about energy policy, she was quite flat and nebulous. Her biting sarcasm against the Democratic party with such bromides like raising your taxes and ballooning government was not impressive. Her views on the less fortunate?
She mentioned that she would be an advocate for children with special needs. That’s all we gathered. This is the person who is um, forget heartbeat, a stroke from the Presidency and this is all she could muster? She sounded more like the wife of a Vice President than of Vice President. The media was the subject of her scorn for asking basic questions about her credentials. And when the Blogosphere dared to question the paternity of her newborn Trig, that’s when she decided to come semi-clean on her daughter, Bristol 17, pregnant with child who intends to marry the father. This is a mother who is fiercely pro-life and advocates abstinence. Apparently while she was ambitiously getting her politics on, her kid was, well you know? Getting her freak on! Gives the phrase spending “quality time” a fresh nuance, eh?
This is not an attack on her daughter but one has to question her mother’s judgement and parenting. What’s wrong with giving her child a choice in a world where prurient subliminal seduction is rife throughout our world? Choice, meaning straight talk like “Hey, if you are dating a boy, you may want to know what a condom looks like.” But I guess birth control is out of the question for a far-right ideologue like Sarah. Now, I am pro-life too, but in the case of rape and incest, I understand why a mother may want to abort. I see they brought Levi “fuc*ing Redneck” Johnston out for the soiree. Brilliant.
Now they could keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn’t blab to the hungry National Enquirer reporters tucked in his bushes outside. I heard those reporters flaunt wads of cashola for an exclusive. Hey, Levi, get an agent and secure a 7 figure book deal. But hurry up before those brakes conveniently conk out in that automobile to tragically veer you off the road. Here is an excellent article on the real Sarah Palin from someone who knows her well;

I mean, she is currently under investigation for firing a Public Safety Commish for not firing a state trooper. She recently hired an attorney to remove the handling of the probe from the legislature to a three-member panel that she appoints. Oh, how transparent. When she was mayor of Wasilla, she fired a librarian and a police chief so she left a trail of enemies in that state. For those who didn’t see her speech, here is a snippet.
